What is the caduceus?
Both symbols below denote the spine with the energy going up the center, from the base of the spine (sacrum means sacred) through the top of the skull. Look at the picture to the far left, this symbol is referred to as caduceus and is the origin of the medical symbol today to denote healing.
Symbol of medical profession
Oxford dictionary definition: the wand symbol originates of Hermes or Mercury consisting of a winged staff with two serpents entwined; used as a symbol of the medical profession.
Energy traveling up spine and twisting around the chakras
This is very interesting because looking at the next picture on the left, taken from Anodea Judith, PHD’s book, Wheels of Life, you can see the energies running up the spine looks like the healing symbol above it. The illustration to the left is the chakra major and minor energy pathways. After looking at the charka energy pathway drawing it looks as if the caduceus were a tracing.
The source of the drawing is the book, Wheels of Life and what the word wheels is referring to chakras. Here is a description of the sketch above. ” The major and minor chakras and their chief pathways.” This picture will take you to the book, Wheels of Life.
Chakras can be compared to spinning wheels, vortexes of energy. The seven major chakras are usually depicted by a chakra colors and chakra symbols.
The chakras are connected by a non-physical channel running up the center of the body referred to as the “sahasrara” and on either side is the Ida and Pingala, twisting figure eight patterns around each chakra. The Ida and Pingala are referred to as “nadis”. The flow along the nadis contribute to the spinning of the chakras.
The whole system is governed by 3 channels of energy (Nadi’s in sanskrit):
- Ida – Left channel
- Pingala – Right channel
- Sushumna – Central channel
In her book, “Wheels of Life”, Anodea Judith describes the journey of the energy to the chakras in an excellent way. “The crossing of the nadis in the chakras makes each center sling in an opposite direction to the one above and below.”
This makes the chakras act like gears as the subtle energy goes up and down the spine.
What are chakra symbols?
The petals of any of the lotuses are made by primary forces, which radiate out from the body like spokes from a wheel. The number of spokes is determined by the number of powers belonging to the force which comes through a particular chakra. So if you have twelve petals, then letters are give to these that eventually symbolize a certain section of the total creative power or life-force coming into the body.

Now you are seeing how important it is to keep the chakras in balance and that is done through regular meditation.
On the internet while looking at various information on chakras I came across this on the importance of chakras.
I am listing the importance according to the Aum Shiva blog, although I do not know the original source other than the author says his gurus. Their website says the importance lies in being able to divide down where the energy comes from.
Here is their break down of the energy in the 7 main chakras in the body. They are referring to the energy the body requires constantly to carry out all activities.
Food = 10%
Inhaled prana = 20%
Remaining 70% absorbed from the universe by chakras.
They continue by saying as we raise our consciousness the chakras then are able to tap energy through higher dimensions, from the chakras & nadis.
Meditation is the best way to balance your chakras.
