Birthstone goes back as far as the first century. It started out that people believed the birthstone that was assigned to the month had a special virtue or cure for anyone born in that month. It is referenced in some books about the Jewish high priest wearing twelve stones in his breastplate may be some reference to birthstones. The Bible’s book of Revelation ascribes attributes of each of the twelve apostles to each of the stones. The Hindus have their own interpretation.

The list below was adopted in 1952 by the major jewelry industry associations for birthstones.
